What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are custom-made to fit over the front-facing surface of a patient’s tooth. Although they are only about the width of a fingernail, they can effectively conceal multiple imperfections, including chips, cracks, gaps, and stains. Plus, the size, shape, and shade of each one will be chosen based on your specific smile goals, giving you results that are as subtle or dramatic as you’d like!

The Process of Getting Veneers

The first step of the entire veneers process is your consultation with Dr. Henry Diep. Once he has learned about your aesthetic goals and determined that you are a candidate, he will work on your custom treatment plan. This is when you will select the size, shape, and shade of each veneer!

Before sending off your treatment plan to the dental lab, we’ll need to remove a sliver of enamel from your teeth and take impressions. Since the lab artisans usually need a few weeks to craft your veneers, we’ll provide you with a temporary set in the meantime. To prevent them from falling off, we ask that you make a few adjustments to your diet and oral hygiene regimen (which we will cover in-depth at your appointment).

When your final veneers arrive at our office, we’ll carefully inspect them to make sure they are perfect. Then, we will schedule your final appointment. At this time, we will carefully remove your temporary veneers, bond your permanent ones in place, and give you detailed instructions on how to care for your smile moving forward!

Veneers FAQs

Are Veneers Permanent?

While veneers are not permanent since they will eventually need to be replaced, they are considered irreversible since teeth that have received them will have to wear them from then on. Placing veneers requires the removal of a small amount of enamel from the treated teeth. Since enamel does not grow back, these appliances will serve to protect the teeth by preventing injury and infection.

What Happens to the Teeth Under Veneers?

Placing veneers will not harm your teeth since only a minimal amount of enamel is removed and the bonding material used to cement the appliances in place is completely safe. Since the veneer will protect the tooth, receiving one will not increase its risk of developing cavities and other infections. However, it’s still crucial to practice excellent oral hygiene after receiving veneers to remove plaque and food debris, as a veneer will have to be removed and possibly replaced if the tooth wearing it becomes infected. A few great ways to keep your newly transformed smile in fantastic shape include brushing and flossing regularly, limiting your sugar intake, and attending regular dental exams and cleanings at our Hayward office.

Do Veneers Give You a Lisp?

While you may have difficulty pronouncing certain words when you first receive your veneers, the resulting lisp should be mild and temporary. Since veneers change the shape of your teeth, your tongue will have to get used to their presence and adjust its movements accordingly. Until your tongue has acclimated to your new smile, you may have trouble when pronouncing the “s” or “v” sounds. While we may be able to adjust your veneers to reduce your lisp, a great way to get rid of it at home is to read a favorite book out loud and take care to repeat any words that give you trouble until you master them.

Can Veneers Be Used for Bite Corrections?

While veneers can be used to treat minor dental misalignments, their effectiveness is limited since they cannot change the positions of the teeth and jaw. These appliances can be quite effective when addressing gaps between teeth, and if you have a mild open bite, they may be able to make your teeth wider and longer to create a more pleasing alignment. However, we usually only recommend using veneers to correct bite issues if they are primarily of aesthetic concern and don’t significantly impact the patient’s oral health. If you are currently undergoing orthodontic treatment, it’s best to wait until you are finished with it before receiving veneers.

Do Veneers Feel Like Real Teeth?

Many patients report that their veneers feel so natural that they no longer notice them during meals or conversations. A tiny amount of enamel is removed from teeth receiving veneers so the appliances can fit comfortably and evenly upon them, preventing discomfort and a bulky appearance. The materials used to make the crowns mounted on veneers are incredibly smooth and very similar in appearance to real dental structures, ensuring comfortable and natural-looking results.
