If you are scheduled to receive sedation dentistry treatment for the first time at your next dental appointment, you may be wondering what it feels like to be under sedation.
Here’s what you can expect from your sedation dentistry treatment, and how it could make going to the dentist a whole lot easier from now on!
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is the practice of using oral conscious sedation to help patients relax during their dental treatment. Administered via a pill you pick up at your pharmacy prior to your appointment, your sedation will allow you to remain awake and conscious but feeling calm and relaxed throughout your entire procedure. In fact, oral conscious sedation isn’t limited to any one type of appointment; you can even use it during your biannual exams and cleanings, too!
What Does Oral Conscious Sedation Feel Like?
Oral conscious sedation is administered via a pill that your dentist will prescribe you prior to your appointment and you’ll need to take before your treatment. You will also need to have a ride home arranged prior to your appointment, as you will not be able to drive until the sedative has worn off. Plan on heading straight home and resting until the next morning.
While the pill is effective, you can expect to feel calm and relaxed, and maybe a little groggy. You should not fall asleep during this time, but though you will remain awake, you may find it difficult to speak. You may also not remember much of what happens while under sedation, however there is no need to worry about it acting like “truth serum” or making you confess your deepest secrets to your dentist, but rest assured that even if you do say anything under sedation, it will be kept completely confidential.
Am I a Good Candidate for Oral Conscious Sedation?
If you experience fear or anxiety that may prevent you from getting regular dental care or necessary treatment, you may be a good candidate for oral conscious sedation. To qualify, you’ll need to be in good health, and fit a few important criteria, so be sure to let your dentist know if you have any allergies, which medications (both prescription and OTC) you are taking, and if you are or could be pregnant, as oral conscious sedation is not recommended in some cases.
